This GOOVIS G3X headset is of very good quality, and I found the setup to be simple. It is comfortable and lightweight, and relatively compact, and does an excellent job of blocking out external light. I like that it tilts up when there is need to talk with someone or see your phone screen without fully removing it. It is also easy for various users to adjust for nearsightedness and PD quickly, so glasses are not necessary, though GOOVIS does include a spacer if your prescription glasses must be worn. Custom prescription lenses can be ordered for those that need them, but I did not find that was needed, and appreciated being able to just dial in my prescription without that added expense. It also made it easier to share with those with other prescription needs. I suspect their head designer must wear glasses, as I do, for the feature is well thought out. Well done GOOVIS!These do make you look a bit silly when worn, and may not be for everyone. Personally I can live with that. You should also not expect them to replace a good theater room for solo movie watching, and definitely not for a group. The high price also makes them hard to justify, unless you have a use case where you either travel a lot, or live in a setting where a large TV or projector screen is not possible (i.e. RV or small apartment).Compared to VR goggles (with similar resolution), I found the GOOVIS to be superior and something I actually want to continue watching a movie with. VR goggles have head tracking which these don’t, but the trade off is that the movie screen stays sharper and in a fixed position, and maintain my interest in the show instead of the ability to hold a virtual conversation with others in the “theater”. With the GOOVIS G3X; I actually wanted to keep watching the movie to the end.So I’ve used the G3X for a couple weeks now, and I’ve watched several 3D movies in full and experimented with watching other sources too. For 3D movies, I found Full Side By Side (FSBS) mkv files in 3840×1080 resolution to work the best, but I also found 4K resolutions to work well too. It really comes down to the file size and the ability of the app you use to render the video to the headsets resolution, for it is just acting like a screen and sound output. The only controls on it are brightness, volume and 3D on/off. When watching a 3D movie where you see the split SBS output, a quick push of that buttons, snaps you into a single 3D view, just like you would expect.Technical Details:I’m streaming my movies to the G3X over a 6E WiFI connection to my iPhone 15 and using the Infuse app. I also had success when using a newer gaming laptop (Win11 & USB-C ports) with both the PotPlayer and VLC; both mkv and BluRay ISO rips played smoothly assuming larger files are stored local. Otherwise streaming from my NAS over WiFi was fine. That is certainly an issue with my wifi speed and not the headset, and if your goal is to travel with these you will need a local source of media files anyways.The basic GOOVIS G3X I received for this review was selling for $649 when I posted this. It did not include the HDMI adapter, nor a hard case. The adapter must be purchased as an accessory, or as part of the G3X bundled with a D4 media player. I found this confusing, for the listing still mentions HDMI support without mentioning that is at extra expense. To confuse things more, most of the videos on YouTube indicate it as included, and even GOOVIS’ own instructional video shows how to connect the G3X to a camera using it without mentioning of it not being included. I believe they did include it in the past, and then changed the offering.Additionally, I found the included USB-C cable to be too short (perfect for use on an airplane, but not for a laptop on a side table when the USB-C port is not facing you. I found it difficult to source a longer cable that would work, for the headset has a recessed well the cable must fit within, and all of the cables I already owned were too thick to fit that. GOOVIS does sell a longer 2m Type-C cable for $35. Not unreasonable, but I would have prefered they either included it or designed the port so thicker cables would work.Even with the few negatives I’ve mentioned, I do really like this headset and enjoy watching my 3D movies on it. Since “upgrading” to a TV that lacks 3D support. I highly recommend the GX3, and would seriously consider a step up to the G3Max if money were no object.
